Sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) is a white or creamy, water-soluble chemical used in many industries, including textiles. It's made up of sodium, sulfur, and oxygen, and its chemical formula is Na2S2O5. SMBS is available in different grades, including food grade, technical grade, high purity, and sodium bisulphite solution.
Sodium metabisulphite is used to neutralize regular bleach that can stay in fabric even after rinsing.
Sodium metabisulphite is used as an antioxidant agent in many pharmaceutical formulations. It is extensively used as a food preservative and disinfectant. It has been demonstrated that sulphite exposure can affect some organs.
Neutralizing bleach
Removing chlorine
sodium metabisulfite finds application as a bleaching agent for various fabrics, particularly wool and silk. Its reducing properties help remove colored impurities and achieve a brighter, whiter appearance.
Sodium Metabisulfite (SMBS) is often used as pretreatment to large RO systems for free chlorine removal and as a biostatic.
